Kipling Tiger Tour

World
renowned for its population of tigers, Kanha National park provides excellent
opportunities for observing these magnificent animals in the wild on jeep drives
and elephant backs. North of Kanha is Bandhavgarh National Park where the first
white tiger was captured and most of the white tigers in captivity have descended
from that tiger. Both the national Parks are countries Prime Tiger Reserve under
Tiger Project. Not far from the Bandhavgarh are the Temples of Khajuraho. They
are master pieces of temple architecture. Of the temples many have exquisitely
and explicitly carved scenes from the Kamasutra. Built in the 10th to 11th century
by the Chandella dynasty, they are in a marvelous state of preservation.

The lions that figure in the stories off the Bible and ranged through Persia
to the North of India are now confined to a tiny pocket in the Saurashtrian
Peninsula in western India. Called the Asiatic Lion, little more than two hundred
of these magnificent animals survive in the 300 sq. km. of Gir National Park.
Their numbers have recouped from about 20 in 1913 to present levels after the
Nawabs of Junagarh initiated conservation measures. Gir also has a large population
of leopards that are more easily seen here than elsewhere. Also to be seen are

The Elephant Playground
The lord of the jungle is indeed the elephant and not the tiger as many believe.
Elephants in the wild call for more caution than any other animal. Elephants
have been a part of Indian life for 3,000 years. Ganesha the elephant headed
Hindu god is worshipped as a harbinger of good luck and prosperity. Elephants
are a common sight on our roads and temples and as a source of power in forestry
operations. Nagarhole and Periyar are two noted parks where elephants roam freely
with other animals.
